CATO Institute - www.cato.orgThe Cato Institute’s Michael Tanner will be presenting a speech titled “Health Care Reform, Free Markets, and YOU!” on the campus of Northwood University on Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00pm in the Griswold Lecture Hall. The event is Co-Sponsored by the Northwood University Economics Association and Students for a Free Economy, a project of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. The event is free and open to the public.

Northwood-2-ColorRegarding the event, Northwood University President Keith Pretty shared that, “with the healthcare debate raging in Washington D.C., we are fortunate to have Michael Tanner here on campus to add his unique perspective to these discussions.” Lance Lewis, Northwood University Academic Dean, seconded this notion saying, “health care is an important issue for everyone in the U.S. as it is an overarching question of funding, access, the role of government, and the expectations of a society.

Midland’s landlord population is deeply concerned about proposed additional tax-exempt rental housing units in the city, and intends to make its feelings known to the Midland City Council on Monday night.

The council will consider an ordinance requested by Midland’s Affordable Housing Alliance (AHA) and Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault/Shelterhouse, removing seven single-family homes from the city property tax rolls to provide low-rent housing for qualified tenants. The ordinance received a favorable first reading by the council on Oct. 5.

Instead of taxes, the homeowner — in this case AHA, a non-profit agency — pays the city a fee to offset the cost of city services for those tenants. The state grant-funded program is called PILOT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes).

At its monthly meeting last Tuesday, the Midland Area Real Estate Investors Association (M.A.R.E.I.A.) took aim at the PILOT program on several fronts.

Elected Reps' Silence is Proof of Need for Stronger Citizen Action

PDFPrintE-mail

Last Updated on Friday, 18 September 2009 12:27 Written by Federalist Sunday, 06 September 2009 20:05

Four of five of elected officials from Michigan who received formal request letters from WTPMM to hold public informational meetings have failed to respond to those letters. Their failure to respond is a strong indicator that the citizens of Michigan whom they were elected to represent will likely be better served in the representative process by initiating stronger, more deliberate action to ensure that their questions will be answered and their views will be represented in both houses of Congress.

On August 10, 2009, branch offices of Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, and U.S. Representatives Dave Camp (4th), Bart Stupak (1st), and Dale Kildee (5th), all received

Certified letters by U.S. Mail, sent by Mike Trainor on behalf of the citizens’ action group, “We the People of Mid Michigan.” The letters requested that the officials hold formal public meetings for the purpose of answering citizens’ questions about health care reform and energy legislation now before Congress. A copy of one such letter is posted at this link.  (will open PDF in new window)

Why We Exist

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by We The People of Mid-Michigan Friday, 19 June 2009 17:45

We the People of Mid-Michigan are united in our belief in the fundamental truths upon which our system of self-government—the executive, legislative, judiciary, and individual state governments—was founded, and to which it must be restored to function, as defined by the strict limits enumerated in the Constitution of the United States of America.

We exist to UNITE, INFORM, STRENGTHEN, and CALL the People of Mid-Michigan to ACTION in our common cause to support and work with those individuals and organizations that seek to elect public officials who will enact legislation that observably support the fundamental truths that are the basis of self-government in our Democratic Republic.

Decades of increased education spending have yielded little academic progress. Academic achievement nationally has flat lined, and graduation rates are no better today than they were in 1970. But despite these historic levels of education funding, the Obama administration, at the behest of teachers unions, is seeking to further inflate funding for the public education sector.
